How CBD works for Anxiety

So, how could CBD work for those struggling with anxiety? It’s believed the endocannabinoid system may play a key part in the link between CBD and anxiety. This clever system is made up of receptors that are located throughout the body. You have the CB1 receptors, which exist in the brain and spinal cord, and the CB2 receptors, which are distributed in the immune system.

It’s believed these receptors can be activated by phytocannabinoids, just like CBD. Feelings of anxiety unbalance these receptors – and CBD can be the helping hand to put everything back in balance. When someone is suffering anxiety, it’s thought that cannabinoid can attach to CB1 receptors in the brain, potentially helping you experience a therapeutic, anxiety-calming effect.

Here at Well lab our CBD oils are different. We very much believe in what is known as the entourage effect and evidence is growing to suggest that pure CBD used in isolation is not the best way to exploit cannabidiol for health purposes. In fact, specific combinations of CBD with terpenes and cannabinoids found both in the cannabis plant and other plants, serve to enhance its therapeutic effects especially when combined with specific herbs. Terpenes are aromatic compounds that are believed to have many varied health benefits.

Our range of products, including WELLBEING and SOOTHE all include expertly chosen herbal extracts added to help reduce anxiety, such as limonene which is infamous as being one of the best terpenes for anxiety as well as helping to relieve paranoia and restlessness.

Cannabis compounds work in synergy with the human body, binding with endocannabinoid receptors found in the brain and central nervous system. The process mirrors how cannabinoids produced by the body bind with these receptors. However, when combined with other extracts, the process can become even more effective.

Basically… the additional expertly added elements in our oils can turbo charge the effectiveness of CBD.

Can CBD help Anxiety

In recent times, probably down to the ever-increasing statistics of people suffering with anxiety, the number of preclinical trials and scientific publications are growing around the impact of CBD on anxiety, sleep, and depression.

One review in 2015 published in Neurotherapeutics Journal explored evidence from preclinical, clinical and epidemiological studies around the potential benefits of CBD as a treatment for anxiety disorders. To summarise, it found that research supported CBD’s efficacy as a solution for reducing anxiety behaviours – including, obsessive compulsive disorder post-traumatic stress disorder and seasonal affective disorder.

A further study in 2019 was published in The Permanente Journal of 72 adult patients was conducted at a psychiatric clinic to document patients’ levels of anxiety and sleep quality across a month period when using CBD. Levels of anxiety decreased within the first month for 79.2% of participants, and then remained decreased for the rest of the study. Improvements to patient’s sleep were also documented for 66.7%, although this was noted to fluctuate over time.

In 2011, another study published in Sage Journals researched CBD’s effects on people with social anxiety disorder (SAD). Participants were 400 milligrams (mg) of CBD orally or a placebo. Those who received CBD experienced overall reduced anxiety levels.

Furthermore multiple recent studies have shown that PSTD symptoms can be aided by CBD, reducing nightmares, and replaying negative memories. These studies have looked at CBD as both a standalone PTSD treatment as well as a supplement to traditional treatments like medication and cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT).

Finding the right CBD dosage for Anxiety

Finding the right dosage of CBD is personal to you, as each of us are unique down to our genetics and chosen lifestyle. So, it’s important to personalise your dosage based on how you find you respond to CBD oil – it’s time to listen to your own body.

We will always recommend our users to start with a low dosage and then increase as you see fit, finding the perfect level that uniquely works for you – there is no one-size-fits all approach to it.

The right dosage is also very much down to the ailment you are taking it for and if there is a peak time for the symptoms of that ailment to affect you. If you’re taking CBD for anxiety, kick starting the day with a dose can give you a balanced feeling right from the get-go, however, it can also be used on the go, so taking it ahead of something that drives your anxiety – like public speaking, an exam or test, or a big important meeting can work.

If your anxiety tends to build up over the course of the day and your evenings are when you’re most unsettled, then it’s time to reach for your CBD. Taking a dose in the evening can help calm and reduce any anxiety that’s built up and set you up for a relaxing and well-deserved night’s sleep.

We do recommend not using more than 70mg per day though, and if you’re already taking prescribed CBD medication, you should consult your doctor before consuming more.

Possible side effects to taking CBD oil

Most people that take CBD only feel the benefits and joy the products can bring, but in very small cases some people do suffer side effects.

We suggest you start slow – take a low dose to begin with and see how you and your body responds. We are sure the many benefits of our CBD oils will be felt in no time.
